EMPOWER2LIV@UTN strengthens well-being and quality of life for Marginalized Urban and Rural (MUR) communities in Imbabura province, Ecuador—specifically the Indigenous Karanki and Kayambi peoples.
Through the innovative Kawsay Living Lab hosted by Universidad Técnica del Norte (UTN), the project creates a transformative space where community members, researchers, and students collaborate as equal partners to co-create sustainable solutions.
At the heart of this approach lies the revitalization of Saberes Ancestrales (Ancestral Knowledge). The project validates traditional wisdom through scientific research and develops innovative fusions with contemporary practices across five interconnected themes: education, health, environment, economy, and nutrition. Two transversal subprojects on Saberes Ancestrales and institutional capacity strengthening ensure coherence and synergy across all initiatives.
The Kawsay Living Lab establishes thematic hubs as participatory platforms where diverse stakeholders exchange knowledge and co-create context-specific solutions grounded in both Indigenous wisdom and scientific expertise. By centering community voices and Indigenous leadership—particularly women—the project promotes social inclusion and systemic change, embodying the principle of Leave No One Behind.
